Gamescom 2019 kicked off with a two-hour-long Opening Night Live presentation.
Hosted by well-known video games journalist and TV presenter Geoff Keighley the ceremony gave the crowd at Cologne a look at trailers, new gameplay from previously announced games, sequels to some current ones and reveals for a whole bunch of new games.
Here’s a roundup of the biggest announcements from Opening Night:
Opening Night started off with Gears of War 5. Microsoft gave us a new campaign story trailer and unveiled a Halo: Reach Pack that allows you and your friends to jump into the skirmish as characters from Halo: Reach. You can also play as the T-800 from Terminator in Horde mode.
Erica: An Interactive Thriller, a live-action PlayStation 4 game that was announced in 2017 was launched today. It is available for $10 on the PlayStation store.
Activision announced that the multiplayer alpha for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will start on August 23, on PlayStation 4 and will feature a 2v2 mode.
Kerbal Space Program is getting a sequel, Kerbal Space Program 2 and it is due next year. It will be available on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Sega and Endless Space developer Amplitude Studios, have teamed up to create a simulation game called Humankind. Due in 2020 this game lets you control the development of human history.
Bandai Namco and Tarsier Studious announced Little Nightmares II, due for release in 2020. It will be available on PS4, Switch, PC, and Xbox One.
We also got to see new footage of FIFA 20’s Volta gameplay story mode.
Classic helicopter-warfare series Comanche got an upgrade from THQ Nordic as a team-based online game. The 1992 copter-shooter now has drones! The game goes into alpha and beta testing this year with early access dropping in the first half of 2020.
Need for Speed: Heat, developer, Opening Night showed off the new Need for Speed: Heat Studio app for Android and iOS. The app will let you start customizing your cars now before the game launches in November.
Magic: The Gathering Arena will be coming to the Epic Games Store in a semi-exclusive deal before the end of the year. While it will still be available for direct download from Wizards of the Coast, Epic will be the only third-party store you’ll be able to download it from.
Predator: Hunting Grounds got its big gameplay reveal on Opening Night. The PS4, console exclusive game is a 1v4 PvP multiplayer action game where one player takes the role of the Predator and tries to hunt down a team of four other players.
Capcom showed off new footage for its upcoming Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion.
Yager Studios brought their new game, The Cycle, to Gamescom 2019. This unique PvPvE (Player vs Player vs Environment) competitive quest shooter is Free 2 Play and can be downloaded from the Epic Games Store now.
Borderlands 3 developer Gearbox announced a new objective-based challenge mode called Proving Grounds. They are also bringing back the Circle of Slaughter Survival mode. Gearbox said they would be revealing more about their ‘end game’ during the week.
The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt on Nintendo Switch now has an official reveal date: October 15 2019.
Space action sim Everspace is getting a sequel in 2021.
V1 Interactive, co-creators of the Halo franchise, showed off their first project, a sci-fi FPS called Disintegration. Disintegration is due for a 2020 launch and will include a full single-player campaign and Multiplayer.
Hideo Kojima closed the ceremony by showing off a bit of the gameplay for his upcoming Death Stranding and also introduced a character called Mama.
Geoff Keighley also revealed that he has an in-game cameo in Death Stranding.
