The popularity of My Dress-Up Darling’s Marin Kitagawa skyrocketed in 2022 with the release of CloverWorks’ anime series.
Male and female fans alike fell in love with Winter 2022’s best girl and her genuine passion for cosplaying.
Similar to the anime character, Japanese idol and performer Akase Akari shares the same fascination for cosplay. Akari had, in fact, performed the music video for Koi no Yukue, the anime’s ending song, in full Kitagawa Marin cosplay.
Akase Akari is the best Kitagawa Marin cosplayer ever, and you can’t convince us otherwise
The music video was nothing short of perfect, with Akari cosplaying the anime protagonist — a rare moment where real life mirrored anime.
She portrayed Marin’s high school getup in a complete uniform, choker, and the character’s iconic blonde hair with pink gradient tips.
Aside from her school getup, the anime singer also cosplayed Marin’s cosplays, namely Shizuku Kuroe from the video game series Saint ♡ Slippery’s Academy for Girls and Black Lobelia from the anime series Flower Princess Blaze!!.
With a real-life cosplayer cosplaying a character and her favorite cosplays, can we call this a cosplay-ception, just like the movie Inception?
Further drawing the line between anime and reality, Akari also posed beside a Marin figure.
“I love (Marin), a wonderful lady who is sparkling and dazzling and enjoys her hobbies and lives life to the fullest,” she once wrote on her Twitter account.
Kitagawa Marin is one of the protagonists of CloverWorks’ My Dress-Up Darling anime series. The anime starts with the story of Gojo Wakana, a high school student with a passion for creating Hina dolls, Japanese dolls that resemble the Heian-era monarch.
One day, he runs into his classmate, a hardcore otaku (a person obsessed with anime, games, pop culture, and the like) named Marin. The two hit it off and discover their shared love for creating clothes, specifically costumes used in cosplay.
Just like Marin, Akari is also into cosplaying and watching anime. She has cosplayed other characters such as Cardcaptor Sakura, Maki Zenin from Jujutsu Kaisen, Kamisato Ayaka from Genshin Impact, Yor Forger from Spy x Family, and Makima from Chainsaw Man.
